Reason #3: Local Businesses Create Jobs and Offer Higher Wages

As a growing number of people seem to be employed by large chain companies, you might not realize that small businesses actually play a valuable role in the creation of local jobs. Studies show that smaller independent companies actually employ more people per unit of sales than big-box retailers. Not only that, but research also shows that these local companies are able to retain their employees during times of economic hardship which cannot be said about large-scale chain companies. While a big-box retailer may seem to provide more job opportunities due to its size and number of roles they have to fill, studies show that the wages offered to employees fall short of meeting their needs. This causes their employees to require an average of $3,000 per year of extra support from government-funded programs such as Medicaid, food stamps, and housing assistance. On the other hand, small businesses are found to be connected to higher rates of income growth and a lower percentage of poverty. Supporting local businesses allow them to provide solid jobs and better wages to others in your community.
