Reason #7: Small Companies Increase Competition

Supporting small businesses will create a marketplace of tens of thousands of independent companies which is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. An increased number of competitors will motivate established businesses, big or small, to continue to develop their products to ensure they are meeting the needs and wants of their customers. It boosts the competition between businesses so that they strive to provide exemplary customer service and quality goods. Each small business will have to fight to maintain unbeatable prices for the products and services they have to offer. However, in an economy made up of a small number of big-box retailers there is no incentive to provide any of these things. Consumers will have such a tiny pool of options of where to shop, and services to use that they will be forced to support chain companies even if they fall short in their quality of service and products they offer. Whether it is a small business that sells clothing or groceries, a locally-owned restaurant or hair salon, or independent company that provides housecleaning services, supporting these type of businesses will have a positive impact on the competition within your community.
